First Steps in a New Land
I was born in France - French is my native Language.
When I first landed in Perth in October 2016, the weight of the English language pressed heavily on my shoulders. Armed with only basic English skills, I found myself at a crossroads, seeking a path that would allow me to build a new life while navigating this linguistic challenge.
The hospitality industry, particularly the French restaurant scene, became my stepping stone. It was a strategic choice – one that allowed me to leverage my native expertise while gradually building my English proficiency. Managing a French bistro created the perfect blend: I could utilize my culinary knowledge while slowly developing my communication skills with staff and customers.
Overcoming Initial Challenges
The initial period wasn't without its struggles. My previous professional abilities felt locked away behind a language barrier, and I couldn't fully express my true self. Rather than letting this defeat me, I channeled my energy into mastering the operational aspects of the business. Day by day, my confidence grew. Interactions with local people became smoother, even in complex situations. One of my proudest achievements was successfully conducting supplier negotiations and customer feedback sessions in English – moments that marked significant milestones in my journey.
Currently navigating between B2 and C1 proficiency levels, public speaking remains my greatest challenge. I still find myself pausing, searching for the perfect word or phrase – a spontaneous aspect of language that even AI can't help with! My French accent, while considered charming by some, occasionally creates barriers in certain conversations. Nevertheless, after eight years in Australia, I can look back with pride at my language development. My communication style has evolved to become more direct and effective, quite different from the elaborate sentences I used to construct during my professional life in France.
Future Aspirations and Growth
Looking toward the future, I'm focused on two main goals: building greater confidence in public speaking and developing the ability to influence others through careful word choice. These challenges don't intimidate me – I've learned to complement my verbal communication with body language and empathy. I'm ready to embrace new opportunities, particularly in companies that value cultural diversity and support continuous improvement.
My journey from a French newcomer to a business professional in Perth has taught me that language barriers, while challenging, are not insurmountable. With persistence, strategy, and the right mindset, they can become stepping stones to personal and professional growth. And as for my French accent? Well, I've learned to embrace it as part of my unique professional identity. While it may occasionally raise an eyebrow in business meetings, it's also become my signature trademark – a reminder of where I started and how far I've come. After all, it's not just about speaking English; it's about communicating effectively while staying true to who you are.
